Understanding Disability Benefits for Supplemental Security Income SSI
Social Security pays only for total disability. This makes Social Security's definition of disability is different than other programs. Benefits are not payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.
Having a "disability" also means you have an inability to work. Social Secuirty considers you disabled if:
1. You cannot do the work you did previously
2. You cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s)
3. Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for a minimum of one (1) year or to result in your death.
