RE: Disabled often wait years for Social Security payment

Check out the article Disabled often wait years for Social Security payment as it appeared in The Dallas Morning News on 4/6/08. Below is a sample of the text:

Patience and tenacity can pay off. About 60 percent of those who request hearings go on to win their cases.

Carolyn Watson filed for disability benefits after becoming clinically depressed and losing her job at a label manufacturer. The 58-year-old Terrell woman used up her $40,000 in savings, charged $25,000 on credit cards and borrowed from her mother while waiting almost two years for Social Security to rule.

"Luckily, I had already paid off my house and car," she said. "I don't know what I would have done otherwise."

Last year, Ms. Watson received $34,000 in retroactive benefits, including the $5,300 she paid Allsup, and began collecting $1,450 a month. She's started to pay off debts, and her disability status now qualifies her for Medicare. Without the coverage, her medications would cost $1,800 a month.

The article helps illustrate why a Social Security Disability Lawyer could be helpful. In the coming years the baby boomers are going to make the Social Security Disability system work harder because of an influx of population that is aging.
